Are you getting ready to head back to work?

As an experienced HR Consultant and recruiter, I often get asked what makes a resume stand out from the crowd.

My number one tip is to not make your resume generic. Recruiters see hundreds of resumes in a day, and after a while they all start to blend into one. You want your resume to stand out and reflect your skills, qualifications, achievements and attitude rather than the same generic information that is on all of the other resumes you are competing against.

Resumes that stand out to recruiters are clear, have lots of white space, are properly formatted and clearly specify out duties and achievements.

Things to look out for when preparing your resume:

Make your purpose match the job. I’ve seen so many resumes where people are applying for a retail job but their resume says that their objective and/or purpose is a administration role.

Make sure that your interests and associations match the values of the business. Think about your interests and activities before including them in your resume. They can create bias (towards other candidates) with the recruiter if they don't have the same interests/activities as you.

Body of resume

What is the best way to write your duties? Write short, specific and easy to digest bullet points about the duties and responsibilities you held. Using an old job description to assist you in this can be very helpful (but don't copy and paste! Personalise the information).

An example of a mechanic's resume may read:

Responsibilities:

- Senior mechanic in a workshop that serviced private vehicles. The Workshop employed two qualified mechanics and an apprentice mechanic. The majority of customers were private customers and a high level of service was required. (see how this is personal - it talks about the structure of the organsiation and the customers of the organisation).

Duties:

- Carried out routine service inspections on vehicles.

- Performed maintenance checks on oil levels, the brake system, steering mechanisms, and wheel bearings

- Was responsible for the management of the Apprentice Mechanic. I was responsible for the initial recruitment, the induction and ensuring that the apprentice completed all on the job training modules

- Responsibility for ensuring that all staff correctly completed job cards for billing (see how these duties are personal - they use the job description as a base and then personalise it)

Achievements - these are personal and can be as simple as:

Succesfully mentored apprentices from recruitment to completion - the workshop had never hired apprentices before. The employer won an award in the local 2012 training awards for providing a positive working environment.

Cover Letters

Too many people forget about attaching cover letters to their applications. Sending a resume without a cover letter is the equivalent of randomly posting your resume to a corporation, with no explanation. Where do you think that piece of mail ends up?

So, we’ve established that cover letters are essential. What do you cover in your cover letter?

Once again. Make it simple.

Address it to the recruiter – personalise it.

Address it to the job. For example – you are a chef looking to get out of the trade. For the past 20 years you have been working as a chef. However, the past five years you have been responsible for ordering, designing menus, creating a website, and implementation of a customer loyalty card. In your cover letter you need to highlight the transferable skills. If you are applying for a job as a retail shop manager, you need to highlight your staff supervision skills, computer skills, upselling skills, stock control skills.

Why should they hire you? What makes you so special to the organisation? Think of three achievements that relate to the job that you are applying for and write these into your cover letter.

Write essential information in your letter that the recruiters may be wondering – ie: if it is a job and you will relocate or fly for interviews write this in the letter.

Melissa Groom is the Host and Producer of Toddlers To Teens Parent TV Show.

Prior to starting her own on-line TV Show Melissa had her own business Groom 2 Success, teaching children Etiquette and Manners. Melissa is the mother of 3 children all with special needs. Nicholas 12 has a life long kidney condition and he underwent a successful kidney transplant in September 2010. Grace 11 is Anaplactic and Matthew 9 has Aspergers a form of Autism.

Melissa’s idea for an on-line tv show came out of a need to be at home with her three children. After juggling work outside the home and child care Melissa decided to re-educate herself to learn the necessary skills to produce and host an on-line tv show. Melissa’s passion is the well-being of her children and helping them and herself be the best they can be. So it was only fitting her tv show was in regards to parenting and children which could allow her to have her own children involved. Nicholas is involved and helps shoot many of the interviews. Grace is an avid interviewer/presenter and Matthew just loves the fact mum doesn’t have to leave home to go to work anymore.

Melissa is a member of Girl Guides Australia and is heavily involved with many community events fundraising for various charities such as the Sydney Children's Hospital, Ronald McDonald House and The ChildHood Kidney Support Network. My motto is to treat others the way you like to be treated and to always give a helping hand. SIDS and Kids Hunter Region are a not-for-profit organisation that provides ongoing bereavement support for those affected by the death of a baby or child during pregnancy, birth, infancy or childhood (for example: miscarriage, stillbirth, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, accidents, illness, drowning).

The organisation also provides support for parents who have experienced the death of an older dependant child.

All monies raised go directly to SIDS and Kids Hunter Region to enable them to continue their support services to families of the Hunter Region.

For new Mums, settling your new baby can be a challenge at times and more often than not it is in the middle of the night when you don't have access to help.

Here is a list of settling tips that I have used in the past for my babies or tips that have been passed on by friends.

First of all checking that babies nappy is clean and dry; ensuring they aren't hungry and are the right temperature.
Slings are fabulous. You can carry your baby close to you and still have your hands free to get things done.
Singing softly and gentle rocking in a darkened room. I also did lunges while singing so I got some exercise in at the same time. Great for the butt and legs especially as they get bigger.
A warm bath followed by a gentle massage with some calming Massage Oil.
Going for a walk in the sunshine with baby snuggled in the pram.
A drive in the car
Swaying and cocooned in a hanging baby hammock.
Baby swaddles help them to feel secure and wrapped up snugly prevents them from waking themselves.
A moses basket on a rocking stand allows you to rock baby gently when they need settling. And the Sleepi Spaces range is fabulous as it is the right height for you to gently rock while it is placed beside your bed.
Lying baby on their tummy accross your knee while sitting and gently patting their back.
Soft rhythmic background music.
Sometimes I also found that static noise helped such as the tv or vacuum cleaner.

If you can recognise when baby is getting tired and get them to bed before they become overtired this helps alot. Signs of tiredness include:

Jerky movements
Rubbing eyes
Pulling ears
Fussing and wimpering

Most importantly, enjoy every second with your baby.. Because before you know it they won't be babies anymore.

Chocolate Coconut Clusters

We have received a fabulous response to our previous recipes so here is another one.

These biscuits are divine and remind me of my childhood as my Mum made them for us to take to school for recess. Now if I ask my kids what they would like me to bake for recess they usually request these biscuits.

I normally double this recipe as they are so popular.

Ingredients
3 ozs butter
3 ozs sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup plain flour
1 tablespoon cocoa
1 cup coconut
3 tablespoons milk

Cream butter and sugar, add egg, then dry ingredients. Put teaspoonfuls on a tray and bake in a moderate oven until cooked. When cool sandwich 2 biscuits together with chocolate icing.

Cauliflower and Bacon Soup

Here is a winter warmer. Fabulous for the cold winter days.
I always get asked for this recipe as it is easy and yummy.. ENJOY!!

Cauliflower and Bacon Soup

½ large cauliflower

3 bacon rashers, chopped

1 medium onion, finely chopped

1 litre (4 cups) water

2 small chicken stock cubes, crumbled

¼ cup cream

2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley

Cut cauliflower into flowerets. Combine bacon and onion in large pan, cook, stirring until onion is soft. Add cauliflower, water and stock cubes, simmer, covered, about 20 minutes or until cauliflower is soft. Blend or process the mixture in batches until smooth. Return the soup to pan, bring to boil, add cream and parsley, reheat soup, stirring, without boiling.

Serves 4.

Serve with crusty bread.

Chocolate Fudge Choc-Chip Cookes

Anyone that knows me personally knows that I have a huge weakness for anything sweet. I would be quiet happy to be in the kitchen all day baking up cakes and biscuits. I often get asked for the recipes and I thought that I would share a few here for all my readers to enjoy..

This recipe is one that I cut out of a magazine many months ago but only just recently baked the cookies - they were a huge hit with the kids.

Chocolate Fudge and Choc-Chip Cookies

Makes: 40
Perparation: 25 mins
Cooking: 25 mins + cooling and standing time

125g unsalted butter, softened
1¼ cups (275g) firmly packed brown sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 egg
1 cup (150g) plain four
¼ cup (35g) self-raising flour
1 tsp bicarbonate of soda

⅓ cup (35g) Nestle Baking Cocoa
250g packet Nestle Dark Choc Bits
375g packet Nestle Milk Melts, cut in half
¼ cup (60g) 100's and 1000's

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/160°C fan-forced. Grease oven trays and line with baking paper.
2. Beat softened butter, sugar, extract and egg in a small bowl with electric mixer until smooth. Transfer mixture to large bowl and stir in sifted flours, bicarbonate of soda and Nestle Baking Cocoa. Stir in the Nestle Dark Choc Bits and ½ cup of the halved Nestle Milk Melts.
3. Drop level tablespoons of the mixture onto trays about 5cm apart and flatten slightly. Bake each tray for about 12 minutes. Cool on trays.
4. Melt the remaining Nestle Milk Melts in a medium heatproof bowl over a saucepan of simmering water. Spread half of each cookie with the melted chocolate, then springle with 100's and 1000's. ALlow chocolate to set at room temperature.

Imagine being able to clean your home quickly and easily, without the use of harsh chemicals! Well I have found the answer..

A few months ago I was fortunate enough to win a pack of Just Cloths via Connect 2 Mums . Just Cloths is a brand of Premium Ultra Microfibre Cleaning Cloths for use in all areas of cleaning your home and car. I must mention here that I am very particular with cleanliness throughout the home and over the years have tried all the new chemicals/cleaning products including microfibre cloths that have come on the market. While I hate cleaning, I hate it even more if my home isn't clean.

The pack of Just Cloths that I received have been simply wonderful. No more wasting money on cleaning products which is not only good for my bank balance it is also great for our health and the environment. You simply wet the cloth and wipe the surface clean. Absolutely fabulous for all surfaces in the kitchen and bathroom. And the best part of all is that these cloths are proven to remove more bacteria than bleach. When you have finished cleaning simply throw the cloths in the washing machine and air dry.

I also have a lot of glass panels on my showers and the glass cloth is a miracle worker - just wipe over and the soap marks are gone and once again their is no streaks left behind. Also great for windows, mirrors and glass splashbacks.

All the fabrics are made of 100% cotton. The mattress outer is made of wool. Inside the mattress it is a synthetic polyfill, which has been selected as it is soft, does not compact, it is easy to wash and dry and is aerated so is breathable for your baby.

Up to what age can our baby use the hammock?

From newborn up to 9 months of age for both day and night sleeps which means they will move straight into a cot so no other bed is needed. If you use the travel adaptor you don't even need a travel cot.

How does the travel adapter / door clamp work and is it safe?

The adaptor rests over the top of a door frame. It is cleverly designed so that the greater the weight pulling down on it, the stronger it grips. They are fully safety tested for strength and include a door stopper to keep the door open. The combined weight of the travel adaptor and hammock is less than 6 lbs meaning it is one of the lightest and most compact travel cots available. Even more importantly, it means that your baby has their own bed that they know and love whether you are at a friend's house, grandparent's house or on holiday somewhere.

How much space does the Miyo Wooden Stand need?

If you can fit a cot in the room, you can fit the frame. The three legs of the frame means it is very easy to position in a room and fits beautifully into a corner. The curved wooden sections of the frame lie next to each other when taken down which allows it to be stored easily. Many people take the frame when they travel as it fits easily into a suitcase.

If you need a space saving solution, then installing professionally-fitted hooks into ceiling joists allows you to suspend the hammock anywhere you like using the included chain.

Is the Miyo Hammock covered by a warranty?

How do I install the Baby Hammock?

1. Remove all parts from plastic protector bags. Keep all plastic away from children. Check that all parts are included. 1 x Miyo Baby Hammock; 1 x Mattress (beige colour); 1 x Wood Separator; 1 x Spring; 1 x Spring Clip; 1 x Chain; 2 x Hooks

2. Using a 6mm drill bit, drill hole into ceiling joists (solid timber ceiling frame not ceiling lining eg. plasterboard). Screw hooks into hole ensuring whole length of screw thread is in timber. PLEASE ENSURE THAT THE HAMMOCK IS DRILLED INTO CEILING JOISTS.
FAILURE TO FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS COULD RESULT IN BODILY HARM.

3. Make sure there is a spring clip at both ends of the spring. Ensure that both spring clips are attached to each end of the nylon strap and spring.

4. Hang chain from hook using the chain to adjust the height to your needs.

5. Once chain, spring and spring clip are hanging, take body of hammock and hang the snaps facing you. Clip the spring clip onto circle ring of the hammock.

6. Place mattress into body of the hammock. Ensure that the tip of mattress is placed by top seam, inside the body of the hammock.

7. Place wood separator about 14 inches (35cm) from the circle ring and the top edge of the hammock until all of the material fits snugly into each groove.

Slide the wood up or down and straighten mattress are confident that the hammock is stable and straight.

Placing baby into hammock: Hold baby safely with one arm, either close to your side or on your hip. With the other arm keep hammock steady. Place baby into hammock ensuring that baby's head is up as far as possible to the top of the mattress. Baby's feet should be at the snap end of the mattress.

Make sure baby is lying straight in hammock. You may need to adjust wood separator and mattress until it is straight.

Once baby is comfortable and blankets (if required), are placed, then fasten snaps.

WARNING: PLEASE ENSURE ALL SNAPS ARE SECURELY FASTENED WHILE USING HAMMOCK.

Yogi Bear The Movie

It’s a great day for a pic-a-nic BooBoo!!

I was delighted to take 2 of my children, aged 8 and 6, to the movies this week to watch Yogi Bear in eye-popping 3D. And what a wonderful time we had.

The movie is set in Jellystone Park, the home of Yogi and BooBoo. Yogi, as always, provides many laughs with his ever failing quest to steal picnic baskets.

However, Jellystone Park is in real trouble with Mayor Brown threatening to close the park so Yogi must prove that he is “smarter than the average bear” in order to save the park, along with BooBoo, Ranger Smith and their new friend Rachel.

Yogi Bear is rated G and a must see for the whole family. Mums and Dads will enjoy it just as much as the kids. And I definitely recommended the 3D version.
